Have you been thinking about starting a wellness routine—maybe yoga, meditation, or clean eating—but find yourself waiting for the “perfect time” to commit? If so, you’re not alone. Many of us hold off on these restorative practices, often because we think we’re not ready, good enough, or simply don’t fit the image in our minds of what participating should look like.
At Creekhaven Inn, we believe there’s no better time to invest in your well-being. Here, we value every step and misstep of the wellness path, encouraging you to meet yourself exactly where you are today.
The Myth of Perfection
When I was first invited to a yoga class, I politely declined. “I’m not flexible,” or “I can’t touch my toes,” became my go-to excuses. Even when curiosity started pulling me toward the practice, I felt convinced that yoga wasn’t for people like me. Every class I attended in the past left me feeling “less than,” as I focused on everyone else who seemed to move through poses effortlessly.
I couldn’t touch my toes, I didn’t look like the instructor, and I certainly didn’t fit the image of the “ideal” yogi I had created in my mind. What I didn’t realize back then was that none of those self-imposed limitations mattered. My mindset—one of resistance and self-judgment—was the only thing holding me back.
Fear of not being good enough was my biggest roadblock. Does this sound familiar?
Finding the Right Guide
There’s a saying that goes, “The teacher appears when the student is ready.” This couldn’t have been truer for me. At the beginning of 2020, my curiosity for yoga was stronger than my hesitation. When I attended a Wellness Reset event, I unexpectedly found my teacher, Becky, who introduced me to a yoga immersion program that eventually led to teacher training.
I resisted at first. “I may not finish,” I told her. “What if I fail?” Becky reassured me every step of the way, offering open dialogue and support throughout my journey. Her wisdom and guidance encouraged me to lean into my own abilities, rather than focus on what I perceived as flaws.
Four months later, I completed 200 hours of training and became a certified yoga teacher. Sure, I was the “most improved” student, but the bigger victory was learning to accept myself as I am—not just on the mat, but off it too.
What Yoga Taught Me About Acceptance
One of Becky’s favorite phrases has stuck with me to this day. She often said, “Tune into your body. Listen to the subtle cues that ease you into a pose, rather than forcing the door down to get there.”
This approach to yoga extends far beyond physical poses. It’s a mindset I carry into everything I do now—embracing where I am today, rather than clinging to a fantasy of where I should be. When we approach life with self-compassion and patience, the path begins to unfold naturally and beautifully, one step at a time.
Teaching yoga, I’ve realized something profound. While I may not look like the archetype of a yoga instructor, that’s not what matters to my students. Time and again, they offer feedback like, “That’s exactly what I needed,” or “That class was perfect for me.” Their trust reminds me that authenticity is more powerful than any preconceived image I once believed I needed to project.
